France: Winter barley harvest progressing well in spite of low acreage
The winter barley harvest in France has progressed fast during the first July weekend, reports said July 03. Results were very good; a large and sound crop of Esterel barley was estimated to be available in spite of the strongly reduced acreage. Protein contents were 9-11 %, lower than usual. The new heat wave may possibly have some negative effect on spring barley.
The same must be said about Germany and the U.K., where prospects had been reasonably good so far.
In all major malting barley regions of the EU prospects had been tempered by cold and wet spring weather, which had lasted too long and had retarded growth and especially root development of spring barley.
